ATHENS, Ga. -
The North Carolina women's golf team placed 15th at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, finishing the event with a 20-over-par 884 total. The Tar Heels posted an even par 288 in Sunday's final round and was led by junior Allie White.
White, from Lancaster, Ohio, was the day's low player, carding an even par 72. She finished tied for 43rd 12-over 228. Freshman Casey Grice, from College Station, Tex., also ended the tournament tied for 43rd with teammate White after posting an eight-over 80. Catherine O'Donnell, a junior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., fired an one-over 73 and finished tied for 27th at nine-over 225. Freshman Katherine Perry, from Cary, N.C., carded a four-over 76 and at 21-over 237 ended tied for 88th. Freshman Jackie Chang finished tied for 90th at 22-over 238 after carding a nine-over 81 in final round play.
This tournament had a different format than most college events - one that promoted a "team" atmosphere. All five competitors from each school played together as opposed to one player from three schools playing together. A team's score for each hole was determined by the low four scores on that hole. The individual championship was still the player with the best relation-to-par score over 54 holes.
Alabama pulled away from the 23-team field, carding a four-under 860 to solidify their lead. Tied for second place were Duke and Purdue at four-over 868. Arkansas finished in fourth at five-over 869 and Florida in fifth at six-over 870. There was another tie for sixth between Auburn and Georgia at seven-over 871. Completing the top 10 were Notre Dame in eighth at eight-over 872, Wake Forest in ninth at 12-over 876 and Michigan State in 10th at 14-over 878.
Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora won the individual honors at four-under 212. Emily Tubert was close behind at two-under 214. Tied for third at one-over 217 was Laetitia Beck of Duke and Stephanie Meadow of Alabama. Florida's Isabelle Lendl was alone in fifth at two-over 218. There was a four-way tie for sixth at four-over 220 between Numa Gulyanamitta of Purdue, Natalie Sheary of Wake Forest, Hannah Thomson of Florida State and Amy Meier of Ohio State. Alabama's Brooke Pancake finished in tenth at six-over 222.
The 54-hole event was played at the University of Georgia and featured a par 72, 6,335-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action March 15-17 for the ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C.
