Women Golfers Grab Lead At Cougar Classic

The North Carolina women's golf team continued play at the Cougar Classic and is in first place following the second round. Carolina fired a 6-under-par 282 in the second round to grab the lead. Tar Heel sophomore Casey Grice is tied for third place in the individual race.
"It was a good day overall," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "Jackie, Courtney, Allie and Casey had great rounds. The hole locations were very tough today. Everyone stayed patient and maintained a high level of confidence with their ball striking and putting. It will be a tough match tomorrow, but we are excited to be leading at this point and look forward to tomorrow's challenge."
Grice, from College Station, Texas, is playing as an individual and fired a 4-under 68 in Monday's second round for a 6-under 138 total in Monday's second round. She carded four birdies in her first nine holes and followed up with one birdie and a bogey on her second nine. Grice's 138 total put her just three strokes behind the overall leader. Sophomore Jackie Chang, from Paradise Valley, Arizona, carded four birdies and just one bogey in Monday's second round. Her second round 69 and 4-under 140 total put her in a tie for seventh place. Senior Allie White, a senior from Lancaster, Ohio, also fired a 3-under 69 to put her in a tie for ninth place. White put a round together with four birdies and one bogey to put her in the top ten at 3-under 141. Junior Courtney Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., was also under par today after carding five birdies and three bogeys to finish up with a 2-under 70 and is tied for 20th with a 2-under 143 total. Katherine Perry, from Cary, N.C., fired a 3-over 75 for an even par 144 total and is tied for 20th place. Catherine O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., posted a 2-over 74 and is tied for 47th with a 150 total.
Florida fired a 4-under-par 284 to move into second place behind North Carolina. They trail the Tar Heels by one stroke and lead third place LSU by three strokes. NC State is in fourth place after firing a 2-over-par 290. Vanderbilt. Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia are all tied for fifth place with a two-day score of 581.
Erica Popson of Tennessee followed up her first round 66 with a 3-under 69 and currently holds the lead with a 9-under 135 total. Trailing by one shot is Austin Ernst of LSU who also shot a 3-under 69 for an 8-under 136. Casey Grice of North Carolina and Camilla Hedberg of Florida are tied for third with a two-day total of 6-under 138. South Carolina's Katie Burnett had the low score of the day with a 66 and is tied for fifth place with LSU's Tessa Teachman at 5-under 139.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Tuesday at Yeamans Hall Golf Club which features a par 72, 6,205-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
