Chapel Hill, N.C.- The Navy squad took a 4-0 lead after five innings and held on for a 4-2 win over the Blue squad on a cool, cloudy afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.
With the lights on and the temperature at 58 degrees after Thursday's high of 90, the Navy squad took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on Parks Jordan's two-run single to right with the bases loaded. Navy scored two more in the fifth on a Matt Roberts single to center and an Adam Griffin sacrifice fly to right.
lue came back to cut the lead to 4-2 on Michael Russell's two-run single to center in the sixth, but that was as close as they would come.
Navy held an eight to six advantage in base hits, and neither team committed an error. Six different pitchers threw in the nine-inning scrimmage.
The next closed scrimmage will be this Sunday afternoon at the Bosh. TarHeelBlue will have exclusive coverage of all of Carolina's scrimmages.
Scrimmage Highlights: Foul ball retrieval was the name of the game on Friday...Trevor Kelly was a perfect seven for seven on balls he retrieved that were fouled out of the stadium...Chris McCue went up in the stands to retrieve one foul ball and returned with five...The baseball budget thanks both of you.
Coach Jackson comments: "Today's scrimmage was better than yesterday's. I thought we squared more balls up. Our young guys are doing a better job of recognizing which pitches they can hit and which pitches they need to lay off of. We still need to do a better job of controlling the zone at the plate.
"For the second day in a row we didn't make an error defensively, which is always a good scrimmage. We threw enough strikes to where you feel like some of the young guys are making some progress with their secondary stuff.
"So far, so good. We're moving in the right direction."
