CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina softball team will kick of its 2011-2012 season with a double-header Oct. 1 against Campbell and UNCG from Dail Stadium in Raleigh, N.C. The Tar Heels face 2010 NCAA Tournament participant East Carolina on Oct. 2, to wrap up the opening weekend.
"Playing in the fall allows us to see how our team is developing each week," said coach Donna Papa. "I like to have the opportunity to play these games to see how we respond to pressure situations and to get the freshmen in game situations so that the spring is not their first time. I am excited about having a number of returning letter winners back, more experienced pitching and a talented group of hitters.
"A highlight for this fall will be playing a National Pro-Fastpitch team in a doubleheader at NC State's Dail Stadium. The NPF team will be made up of a variety of players from the teams in the ACC. UNC has four former player that play on three of the teams: Christine Knauer with the Chicago Bandits, who were also the NPF champions; Lisa Norris with the Akron Racers; and Dani Spaulding and Brittany McKinney with the Diamonds. I hope fans will come out and support UNC and the NPF. It should be an exciting fall season."
Carolina will also host three games from Anderson Stadium Oct. 7 and 9. The Tar Heels will face Elon at 6:30 Friday, Oct. 7 and follow that up with a doubleheader against UNC Wilmington Sunday, Oct. 9, beginning at 2 p.m.
The finale of the fall slate will be a matchup against former Atlantic Coast Conference softball players, who now play in the NPF. That game will be played Saturday, Oct.15, at 2 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
