Former North Carolina All-America reliever Andrew Carignan was called up to the big leagues Friday afternoon as the Oakland Athletics selected his contract and added him to the active roster. Carignan becomes the eighth Tar Heel on a MLB roster this year, the most since eight Tar Heels were on MLB rosters in 1995.
Carignan has battled injuries throughout his minor league career since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics.
Carignan appeared in 12 games in 2007 in low A ball before reaching double A in 2008. The right-hander appeared in just two games of the 2009 season before missing the rest of the season.
The 2010 season saw Carignan go 3-3 in 33 innings of work at the high A level. Carignan opened the 2011 season in extended spring training before officially opening the year at high A Stockton. While in Stockton he racked up five saves to go along with a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA in 11 innings of work.
At the double A level, Carignan made 11 appearances where he registered three saves and a 3.18 ERA.
During his time at triple A with the Sacramento River Cats Carignan has made 13 appearances posting a 2.16 ERA over 16.2 innings of work. Opposing hitters are hitting a meager .186 against Carignan at the triple A level.
Carignan will be seeing some familiar faces in Oakland this weekend as 2007 teammates Dustin Ackley and Kyle Seager will be in town with the Seattle Mariners for a three-game set.
Carignan becomes the eighth Tar Heel to appear on a MLB roster in 2011 equaling a school record set in 1995 when eight other Tar Heels were on MLB rosters.
