FRANKLIN, Tenn.- The UNC women's golf team is in sixth place after the first round of play in the Mason Randolph Fall Preview. The Tar Heels fired a 10-over-par 298, as the four counting scorers shot seven birdies on the final seven holes. Junior Courtney Gunter is tied for second place in the individual race.

Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., recorded two birdies and two bogeys in the first round to finish at even par 72, good for second place. Sophomore Casey Grice, from College Station,Texas, is tied for ninth place after the first round. She hit a birdie on the18th hole to finish with a strong 1-over-par 73. Jackie Chang finished the day tied for 42nd place.

The sophomore from Paradise Valley, Ariz. birdied two of the last seven holes to post 4-over 76. Senior Allie White, from Lancaster, Ohio, fired a 5-over 77 to finish tied for 51st place. She recorded a double bogey and two birdies on the back nine.

Southern California shot a 4-over-par 292 to lead the fieldafter the first round. They finished one stroke ahead of Arizona State, who fired a 5-over 293 to earn second place. UCLA, Alabama, and Vanderbilt are tied for third ahead of UNC, recording an 8-over 296.

Arizona State's Justine Lee finished first individually,firing a 1-under-par 71 in the first round. Carolina's Gunter is tied for second at even par 72 with Alabama's Jennifer Kirby, Texas A&M's Mary Michael Maggio, Arizona State's Giulia Molinaro, Sophia Popov from Southern California, Margarita Ramos from Arizona, and Vanderbilt's Lauren Stratton.

The 54-hole tournament continues through Sunday at Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course, which features a par-72, 6,451 yard setup. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
