Tar Heels Take First at Lindsey Ferris Invitational

Washington, D.C.- The University of North Carolina finished first overall with a score of 192.650 at the Lindsey Ferris invitational hosted by George Washington University Sunday. The Tar Heels won the invitational for the 10th time in a row. The six-team meet also included Penn, Cornell, William & Mary, and Temple. The Tar Heels had the highest combined scores on uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise.
Coach Derek Galvin was very pleased with his team's performance. "It was a fun competition. Overall we were very pleased with the outcome," he said. "We began on balance beam, and came out with a good start. Michelle Ikoma competed for the first time since her injury and had a great vault score. The team did well, and there is plenty of room to improve. This meet is litmus test of where we are, and we know what to focus on."
UNC posted a team score of 48.150 on vault, Kristin Aloi taking first place with a score of 9.775, beating her previous personal best of 9.750. Taylor Brown and Zoya Johnson tied for third place with a score of 9.725.
The Tar Heels took the top spot on the uneven parallel bars with a combined total of 47.950. Morgan Evans scored 9.925, good for first place. She set a personal best, beating her previous high score of 9.900. Zoya Johnson came in second place with a score of 9.825, tying her personal best.
Taking first in beam, the Heels posted a score of 48.300. Elizabeth Durkac and Maura Masatsugu tied for second place with a 9.775. The team also earned the highest scores on floor exercise with a 48.250. Kristin Aloi and Morgan Evans were tied at second with a 9.750.
Senior Morgan Evans finished the all-around competition at fourth place with a score of 38.250. She scored 9.250 on vault, 9.925 on uneven bars, 9.325 on balance beam, and 9.750 on floor exercise.
The Tar Heels are back in action on Sunday, January 29 in the 2012 home opener at 1:00 in Carmichael Arena. This event also features the Get Real & Heel Health Fair, and will be streamed live on TarHeelBlue.com.
