
Miller Logs Win Number 1,300

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - North Carolina fencing coach Ron Miller registered the 1,300th win of his career Saturday as the Tar Heel women's squad defeated Drew at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
The Carolina women were 4-1 on the day, with the third meet providing the landmark victory. The Tar Heel women (the men are in action Sunday) opened the day with a 15-12 win over Sacred Heart and a 20-7 victory against Haverford to put Miller at 1,299 for his career.
Against Drew, the epee squad won 9-0 and sabre and foil both triumphed 7-2 to give Carolina a 23-4 decision and Miller his landmark victory. Senior Allie Mead, part of the epee squad, clinched the win for UNC.
Carolina went on to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson 24-3 before falling 19-8 to No. 4 Northwestern to close out the day.
Among standout performers were freshman Lydia Shahidi, who went 14-0 on the day fencing epee, and freshman Gillian Litynski, who was 13-1 in sabre. The epee squad was undefeated on the day, the sabre squad fell only to Northwestern, and the foil squad went 3-2, including a 9-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson to demonstrate the most improvement on the day.
Carolina is back in action on Sunday, with members of the men's team fencing at the Philadelphia Invitational and at the NYU Invitational.
