TAR HEELS NEED WIN AT NC STATE TO STAY ATOP ACC STANDINGS
North Carolina (23-4, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) will try to keep pace with Florida State and Duke atop the ACC standings when it visits NC State (18-9, 7-5 ACC) on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. at the RBC Center in Raleigh.
The syndicated ACC Network will televise the game in the ACC region, with Steve Martin (play-by-play) and Mike Gminski (analyst) calling the action. The game also will be available online on ESPN3.
The Tar Heels enter this week's action with a 10-2 ACC record, tied for first place in the conference with Duke and Florida State. NC State is in a three-way tie for fourth place at 7-5 with Virginia and Miami.
Carolina has won four consecutive ACC road games, beating Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Maryland and Miami away from Chapel Hill since losing at Florida State on Jan. 14. The Tar Heels are 45-24 on the road in ACC play in nine seasons under head coach Roy Williams, winning almost two of every three league road games in the Williams era.
The Tar Heels have gone 26-5 in their last 31 ACC games, closing 2009-10 by winning two of three conference contests, going 14-2 in 2010-11 and starting this season 10-2.
Carolina is coming off a 74-52 win over Clemson in the Smith Center on Saturday. NC State lost at home to Florida State on Saturday afternoon in its most recent outing.
UNC is ranked No. 7 in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today coaches polls this week. NC State is unranked.
UPCOMING: After Tuesday night's game, Carolina will visit Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va, then return to Chapel Hill for Senior Night against Maryland next Wednesday (Feb. 29).
DOUBLE-DIGIT ACC WINS
Carolina enters the NC State game with a 10-2 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play in 2011-12.
The Tar Heels won their 10th conference game on Saturday vs. Clemson, earning their 36th 10-win ACC season and its seventh in the last eight years under head coach Roy Williams.
No other ACC school has as many 10-win ACC seasons as Carolina. Duke is second with 30.
THE SERIES VS. THE WOLFPACK
The Tar Heels lead the all-time series with NC State, 145-75.
Carolina has beaten the Wolfpack the last 11 times the teams have met and in 17 of the last 18 meetings in the series (with 13 of those 17 wins coming by double-figures).
A win on Tuesday would give the Tar Heels their longest win streak ever against NC State. UNC's current 11-game winning streak over NCSU is tied as its longest winning streak against the Wolfpack, equaling an 11-game streak from Feb. 10, 1934, to Feb. 22, 1938.
The Tar Heels have won 34 of their last 42 games against the Wolfpack.
UNC's 11-game winning streak against NC State is the second-longest in the ACC era against a Big Four opponent. The Tar Heels had a 12-game streak against Wake Forest from 1982-87.
Since 1998, a ranked Carolina team has lost just once to an unranked NC State team, a stretch of 18 such meetings.
Since the Tar Heels lost in Raleigh on Feb. 3, 2007, Carolina is 11-0 vs. NC State with an average margin of victory of 15.9 points per meeting.
Carolina is 57-44 all-time against NC State in Raleigh, including a 9-3 mark in the RBC Center.
Carolina has won 12 of its last 15 games against the Wolfpack in Raleigh, losing in 2007, 2003 and 2002 since 1996.
A win on Tuesday would give Carolina a sweep in the season series against NC State for the fifth year in a row and the eighth time in nine seasons under head coach Roy Williams.
Williams is 22-1 as a head coach against NC State, including a 5-0 record at Kansas and a 17-1 mark at Carolina. Under Williams, UNC swept the season series from the Wolfpack in 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 and took two of three meetings in 2006-07 (splitting in the regular season and beating the Wolfpack in the ACC Tournament title game).
