ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Senior Thomas Ferguson went 1-1 at the NCAA Championships Friday and sophomore Corey Mock went 0-1 as the final two Tar Heels competing had their seasons come to an end. Ferguson finishes the year 23-14, while Mock posts a 27-12 in his second year as a Tar Heel.
Corey Mock was the first Tar Heel to take the mat Friday morning as the sophomore took on a familiar opponent in No. 12 seed Steven Monk of North Dakota State. The pair were scoreless after the first period before Monk posted three points in the second with an escape and a takedown. Mock countered with a reversal to end the second down one at 3-2.
Monk picked up a pair of back points with a minute to go in the final period before a late reversal by Mock made it 5-4 in favor of Monk. Another point for riding time provided Monk a 6-4 win and ended Mock's season.
Senior Thomas Ferguson opened the day against Pennsylvania's Erich Smith in the consolation bracket and jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Smith with a takedown in the first period. Smith notched a reversal to tie things up right away but Ferguson was able to escape to give him a 3-2 lead after the first period.
Smith notched a quick escape in the second period to knot things up at 3-3 going into the final period. Ferguson escaped in the opening seconds of the third period and hung on for the 4-3 win over Smith to advance.
Ferguson then took on No. 8 seed Ryan Loder of Northern Iowa in the next round. Ferguson fell in a 2-0 hole after the first period and was unable to battle back. Loder made it a 5-1 lead after two periods and ended Ferguson's career with a 12-1 win.
Ferguson ends his time in Carolina Blue with an 85-51 career mark.
Carolina currently sits in 54th place with three team points.
