Tar Heel fans around the world are focused on the UNC men's basketball team and the NCAA Tournament. But soon after a new national champion has been crowned, local Tar Heels will join together in a friendly competition to support a charity golf tournament to benefit the SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals.
North Carolina head coach Roy Williams and athletic director Bubba Cunningham will co-host the SECU Family House's annual BBQ and Golf Tournament, April 26 and 27. The goal of the event is to raise $150,000 in funds to subsidize the stays of patients, families and caregivers at the house while they undergo treatment for critical illness or injury at UNC Hospitals.
Tickets are still available for the Thursday evening BBQ ($75 each), which features a live and silent auction, as well as musical entertainment and appearances by UNC athletes who are able to attend. The house expects a sellout crowd of UNC alumni, former Family House guests, Chapel Hill community members, and volunteers. Friday's golf tournament is sold out, and 32 teams will take to UNC's Finley Golf Course to compete for prizes and attempt to best Cunningham on a closest to the pin competition on the par-3 eighth hole.
The BBQ starts at 5:30 p.m. at SECU Family House, located at 123 Old Mason Farm Road in Chapel Hill. The auctions will feature dozens of items--from sports memorabilia and equipment to jewelry, home décor, travel, food and fine dining, and more. Don Basnight will act as auctioneer for the evening.
Participants will have the opportunity to meet Coach Williams and some of this year's players, with Cunningham on hand to mingle with the community.
All proceeds benefit SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals, a 40-bedroom hospitality house that provides an affordable, safe, nurturing home away from home for seriously ill adult patients and family members. At SECU Family House, every gift of $40 provides lodging and food for one family for a night. To date, SECU Family House has provided more than 95,000 guest stays, supporting more than 5,300 patients from 99 of North Carolina's 100 counties, as well as 35 other states and five other countries.
