TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team is in sixrth place after the first round of the Seminole Intercollegiate. The Tar Heels fired a 2-over-par 286 on Friday and were led by freshman Brandon Dalinka who fired a 2-under 69.
Dalinka fired three birdies on the day with just one bogey. The Newtown, Pa., native is tied for seventh place in the individual race. Another freshman, Bailey Patrick, from Charlotte, N.C., is just two strokes behind Dalinka at even par 71 and is tied for 24th place. Patrick Barrett, a redshirt junior from Pinehurst, N.C., carded a 1-over 72 to tie for 30th. Clark Palmer, a junior from Augusta, Ga., carded a 3-over 74 to tie for 52nd while junior Michael McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., shot a 5-over 76 and is tied for 72 along with senior Matt Raudenbush, from Pine Valley, N.J., who also carded a 76 and is competing as an individual.
Host Florida State and Georgia Tech lead the field of 18 teams. The Seminoles and the Yellow Jackets both fired a 6-under 278 in the first round. Mercer is in third place at 3-under 281 while Kennesaw State and Charlotte are tied for fourth place at 1-under 283. Carolina is three strokes back in sixth place at 2-under 286, Michigan State is seventh at 287 and Arkansas State is eighth at 289.
Jeff Karlsson of Kennesaw State grabbed the individual lead at 6-under-par 65. Two strokes back in a tie for second place at 4-under are Chase Seifert of Florida State and Trey Valentine of South Florida. Three players are tied for fourth place at 3-under 68 - Mercer's Thomas Holmes, Jacksonville's James Salmon and Georgia Tech's James White. Carolina's Dalinka is one of six players deadlocked in seventh place at 2-under 69.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at Southwood Golf Course which features a par 71, 7,050-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
