CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Carolina Softball has joined efforts with the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and will host its fourth annual "Strike Out Cancer" event on Saturday, April 14, at 1 p.m. against NC State. The Tar Heels will sport navy shirts with a teal and white logo in support of ovarian cancer research.
Former Tar Heel Jamie (Shaver) Mayberry, who has battled ovarian cancer, will be throwing out the first pitch. Shaver played for the head coach Donna J. Papa and the Tar Heels from 1993-96, where she starred as the Tar Heels' second baseman. Teal balloons will be released in honor of cancer survivors prior to the first pitch.
A silent auction will take place during Saturday's doubleheader for a Carolina team helmet, signed by NFCA Hall of Fame head coach Donna J. Papa. Carolina softball t-shirts will also be for sale throughout the weekend for $25. All proceeds from the auction and t-shirt sales will be donated to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Jamie Shaver Mayberry's name to treat ovarian cancer.
If fans would like to purchase a T-shirt, but cannot make it to the game, you can write a check to Donna J. Papa. You can make the check out to the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center in Jamie's name, earmarked for ovarian cancer research.
