BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team, ranked sixth nationally, moved up six spots to third place after firing a 1-over-par 289 in the second round of the Bryan National Collegiate. The Tar Heels stand at 14-over 590 and were led by Casey Grice and Catherine O'Donnell on Saturday.
Sophomore Grice, from College Station, Texas, fired a 2-under 70 and is tied for 10th place at 3-over-par 147 while senior O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. fired a 3-under 69 for a 151 total and is tied for 34th. Grice and O'Donnell both carded an eagle in Saturday's second round. Grice fired an eagle-3 on the par-5 12th hole while O'Donnell carded an eagle-2 on the par-4 18th hole. Sophomores Katherine Perry and Jackie Chang are both tied for 24th place with 4-over 149 totals. Perry, from Cary, N.C., fired a 3-over 75 in the second round while Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., carded a 5-over 77. Senior Allie White, from Lancaster, Ohio, posted a 3-over 75 for a 153 total and is tied for 45th. Courtney Gunter, a junior from Matthews, N.C., is competing as an individual, has a 159 total and is tied for 76th after shooting an 81 on Saturday.
Tennessee leads the field of 17 teams with an 8-over-par 594 total after shooting a 3-over 291 in the second round. Florida State is two strokes back in second place at 10-over 586 after firing a 1-over 289 on Saturday. Like the Seminoles, the Tar Heels also fired a 1-over 289, the low team score of the day, and are four shots behind Florida State in third place at 590. Ohio State is in fourth place at 591 while South Carolina is fifth at 592, Duke is sixth at 593 and Wake Forest is seventh at 594.
There is a three-way tie for the individual lead at 3-under-par 141 between Ohio State's Rachel Rohanna, Florida State's Jessica Negron and Tennessee's Erica Popson. Negron fired a 3-under 69 in the second round while Rohanna and Popson shot 2-under 70. Lindy Duncan of Duke is alone in fourth place at 2-under 142 while Wake Forest's Olafia Kristinsdottir and UNCG's Fanny Cnops are tied for fifth at 1-under 143 and Wake Forest's Amanda Strang is in fifth place at even par 144.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Sunday at the Bryan Park Players Course, which features a par 72, 6,323-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
