Hatchell And Odom Enjoy Shag Festivities
August 14, 2012 | Women's Basketball
On Sunday, August 12, at the Ocean Drive Pavilon in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., several hundred shaggers gathered for an afternoon of beach music and shag dancing. Among the crowd were various sports figures affliated with many different universities, including coach Sylvia Hatchell, former UNC basketball standout Mike Cooke and former men's basketball coach at Wake Forest and the University of South Carolina Dave Odom.
Coach Odom and Coach Hatchell were inducted together into the NC Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and they have been friends for several years with a shared love of both the game of basketball and traditional shag dancing.
There were many UNC and USC fans present at the Pavilion, and Cooke, along with his wife, Jackie, a former UNC cheerleader, led a shag-off challenge with Odom representing South Carolina and Hatchell representing UNC. The UNC crowd was loud and proud and the dance was ruled a draw, with all monies raised donated to charity. After the shag-off, Hatchell and Cooke celebrated with a dance (below).
