August 5, 2012 | Women's Basketball
VIENNA, Austria --- North Carolina concluded the basketball portion of its 2012 European tour in emphatic fashion Sunday, defeating Austrian club team Vienna 87, 109-45, in the nation's capital. Xylina McDaniel had game highs of 27 points and 13 rebounds as the Tar Heels finished their three-game tour of eastern Europe with three impressive victories.
For the second game in a row UNC used its swarming pressure defense to establish an insurmountable early lead. Against the Hungary U20 national team it was a 23-6 start and Sunday against the Austrian club it was a pair of overwhelming runs. The Tar Heels started the game on a 17-2 spurt and followed that by scoring 19 straight across the first two quarters to lead 42-4 at one point.
The Carolina lead was 50 midway through the third quarter and any remaining drama was eliminated relatively early in the fourth when the Tar Heels topped the century mark.
All eight healthy players played at least 18 minutes of action, including McDaniel, who got her 27 points and 13 boards in just 28 minutes. Five other Tar Heels finished in double figures, including post players Waltiea Rolle and Hillary Summers who each had a double-double. Rolle recorded a double-double in all three games of the tour, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds Sunday. Summers had her most productive game of the tour, tallying 14 points and 13 boards.
Brittany Rountree made eight of her 12 attempts from the field to finish with 17 points, while Tierra Ruffin-Pratt and Danielle Butts had 10 each. Antoinette Bannister (7) and N'Dea Bryant (6) rounded out the Tar Heel scoring.
In addition to her 10 points, Ruffin-Pratt narrowly missed a triple-double, dishing out eight assists to go along with eight steals.
The Carolina travel party will spend its final full day abroad Monday before returning home Tuesday evening.
