Heels Keep Rolling Saturday At Regionals

CHAPEL HILL --- Laura Slater and Kate Vialle scored an upset win over the top-ranked doubles team in the region to highlight play at the ITA Carolina Regionals Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heel duo bested Duke's Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar, 8-7 (6), to advance to Sunday's quarterfinals.
The freshman duo of Hayley Carter and Jamie Loeb joined Slater and Vialle in the doubles quarters with a convincing win over NC State's Elisha Hande and Nicole Martinez, while Ashley Dai and Carter made the singles quarterfinals. Dai and Tessa Lyons made it three Tar Heel pairs in the quarterfinals with an 8-6 win over South Carolina's Meghan Blevins and Brigit Foland.
Dai advanced with a pair of three-set wins. The Temple City, Calif., sophomore opened the day with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, win over South Carolina's Caroline Dailey before topping No. 5 Romy Koelzer of Clemson, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Carter cruised into the quarters with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Duke Alyssa Smith.
Dai and Vialle will open Sunday against No. 5 Kristen Dewar and Yana Koraleva of Clemson, while Carter and Loeb will take on Marianne Jodoin and Smith of Duke. Dai and Lyons will face Wake Forest's Samantha Asch and Luisa Fernandez.
While Dai will take on top-seeded Capra Sunday, Carter will face Foland for a spot in the semifinals.
Play resumes Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Admission for all fans is free of charge.
