October 6, 2013 | Volleyball
CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The #11 Tar Heels remained undefeated with a 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-21) victory against Boston College on Sunday. With its fourth straight sweep, UNC improved to 15-0 on the season, and 4-0 in the ACC.
As a team, UNC racked up 38 kills, six aces, and 12 blocks. Leigh Andrew had seven of those kills, along with nine digs and three blocks, while Jovana Bjelica and Victoria McPherson tallied nine and eight kills, respectively. Paige Neuenfeldt also compiled four kills along with her six blocks for the Tar Heels.
"I am glad we could go on the road and come back with two conference wins," head coach Joe Sagula said. "I thought Boston College played hard and we needed to compete well to come up with a win today."
"I thought our serving once again earned us some key points and we were able to close out the second and third sets with tough serving and blocking. We are happy to head back home with a successful weekend and now prepared for a very big match this Friday vs. Duke."
The Tar Heels took control of the first set early with a tough combination of defense and offense, winning 25-17. The team totaled seven blocks and 11 kills behind strong performances from Jovana Bjelica, who racked up two blocks, two kills, and a service ace, as well as Paige Neuenfeldt, who tallied three blocks of her own.
In the second set, UNC took some time to settle in, getting down by as much as six points early to the Eagles. But a kill by Kayla Berringer tied the score at 18 before a kill by Leigh Andrew on the next point gave the Tar Heels the lead.
Despite a hitting percentage of just .275, Carolina racked up 16 kills, four of which came courtesy of Berringer, to take a hard fought second set by a score 27-25.
Carolina once again started out dominant in the third set, getting ahead early while racking up 11 kills and three blocks as a team, to take the third and final set 25-21.
UNC returns to Chapel Hill next weekend, hosting Duke on Friday at 7 p.m. and Wake Forest on Saturday at 5 p.m. Friday's match against the Blue Devils will be Carolina volleyball's annual Turn It Pink night at Carmichael Arena to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Pink Carolina volleyball t-shirts will be sold, and player jerseys will be auctioned off. Stay tuned to GoHeels.com for more information on the Turn It Pink match.
