UNC to Face No. 2 Oklahoma
March 8, 2013 | Women's Gymnastics
Coming off the team's highest away meet score of the season, North Carolina will travel to Norman, Okla., where the No. 2 Sooners will host the Tar Heels and No. 9 Stanford Sunday at 2 p.m.
In UNC's previous meet versus the Pittsburgh Panthers, the Tar Heels (12-5) combined for a 195.600. Carolina recorded a season-high team total on floor exercise with a 49.200 and fell just .050 short of tying the balance beam season record.
Senior Elizabeth Durkac, who is one of the team's captains, earned a personal-best 39.325 to take the all-around competition for the third week in a row. This marked her fifth all-around title of the season to lead the East Atlantic Gymnastics League.
"The team is very excited about traveling to the University of Oklahoma," said head coach Derek Galvin. "They have an impressive team, and so do we."
Despite Oklahoma's 16-0 record, the Sooners were recently replaced by Florida atop the NCAA Division 1 rankings. Oklahoma will have only have one day to prepare for the Tar Heels and Cardinals as the Sooners face No. 16 Arizona tonight.
Stanford (10-3) is averaging 196.381 per meet. The Cardinals will enter Sunday's competition with momentum gained from their final home meet in which the team bested Oregon State and California.
"Each time we compete, this team seems to learn more about competing more effectively," said Galvin. "That's exciting to see from a coaching standpoint, but I think it's also fun for the gymnasts because they recognize that this team continues to get better and our best gymnastics is still ahead of us."
Carolina will round out the regular season at home as the Tar Heels welcome Pennsylvania to Carmichael Arena March 16 at 1 p.m.
