UNC Falls 4-3 At UNCW In Goal Scoring Spree
October 1, 2014 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (5-4) scored on its first shot of the match in the eighth minute to take an early 1-0 advantage over the host Seahawks.
Rob Lovejoy found Walker Hume for his first goal as a Tar Heel. The transfer from Rollins College collected the cross and banged home the opening goal just inside the right post.
Lovejoy earned his team-leading fourth assist on the early goal.
Reserve Alexander Schlobohm entered the match in the 35th minute for the Seahawks and just 53 seconds later he bent a curling shot into the upper-left corner for the equalizing goal.
The match went into intermission tied 1-1, but UNCW took its first lead of the evening on an early second half goal by Jamie Dell in the 52nd minute. That set the tone for an bonanza of goal scoring in the final stanza.
The Seahawks would add another goal exactly 10 minutes later by Colin Bonner in the 62nd minute for a 3-1 advantage over the Tar Heels.
Determined not to go quietly over the final half hour of the match, the always gritty Verneri Valimaa weaved his way through the UNCW defense and found the back of the net in the 68th minute for his first goal of 2014 to cut the deficit in half at 3-2.
Freshman Alan Winn had a chance moments later in the match when he got 1-v-1 with UNCW keeper Sean Melvin but the save was made in the 70th minute to keep the Seahawks up a goal.
Dell struck again for his second goal of the evening to give UNCW a 4-2 lead in front of a record turnout of over 2,600 in attendance for this in-state battle.
Still fighting for a result, Carolina got a late goal from Winn at the 84:02 mark for his second goal of the year, but time wasn't on the Tar Heels side as the Seahawks held on for the victory.
Carolina finally gets back home to play at Fetzer Field this Friday against Clemson at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on GoHeelsTV.
