Double OT PK From George Sends UNC To Victory
October 4, 2014 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (6-4, 2-2 ACC) sent the match into overtime on a goal from Walker Hume in the 78th minute that brought the Tar Heels all the way back from a 2-0 first-half deficit.
Clemson (5-5, 2-2 ACC) jumped out on top 2-0 in the first 35 minutes of the game by scoring on its only two shots of the first half.
First it was Diego Campos in the 22nd minute when he knocked in a cross by Ara Amirkhanian for the 1-0 lead.
Carolina had three good looks at finding the equalizer over the next few minutes, but could not put the ball in the net. The Tigers took advantage of that when a UNC give away deep in its own end resulted in a goal from Austen Burnikel in the 35th minute.
The Heels later cut its deficit in half with a goal from freshman Zach Wright at the 41:29 mark. Nick Williams started the play with a strong throw in that found Walker Hume and he immediately flicked the ball with his head over to Wright for his first collegiate goal.
In the second extra session, freshman David October was dragged down in the box that resulted in George scoring the penalty kick at the 101:16 mark for the Tar Heels.
Carolina held an 19-5 shot advantage and controlled play for most of the match. The Tar Heels also owned a 13-4 corner kicks edge over the Tigers.
UNC hosts Campbell Tuesday at 7 p.m.
