UNC Opens Fencing Season With Strong Performances

Members of the UNC men's and women's fencing teams competed at the North American Cup in Portland, Ore., over the weekend, with several strong performances in the first competition of the fall.
Top finishers were sophomore Amanda Lalezarian, who placed 20th in Division 1 women's foil and senior Gillian Litynski, who was 24th in Division 1 women's sabre.
Fencing in Division 2, Sarah Hanvy took seventh in women's sabre and freshman Samantha Galina was eighth in women's epee.
Some fencers competed in more than one weapon, with Evan Philpot fencing both sabre and foil in Division 1.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the competitive Temple Intercollegiate Open in Philadelphia. The women's team will compete on Nov. 1 and the men's team on Nov. 2. For the full schedule, click here.
