Tar Heels Well-Represented in Round of 16 at ITA Carolinas

CARY, N.C. - Four singles competitors and four doubles pairs from the North Carolina men's tennis team advanced to the Round of 16 in the singles and doubles draws at the ITA Carolinas Regional on Friday at Cary Tennis Complex. The Tar Heels' successful day was headlined by senior Oystein Steiro, who registered one of his biggest wins in a Carolina uniform by taking down South Carolina's 25th-ranked and third-seeded Andrew Adams in three sets.
Steiro, who defeated Adams 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, notched his fourth victory of the fall and vaulted himself into the draw's final 16 with the win.
Carolina sophomores Brayden Schnur, Ronnie Schneider and Jack Murray ensured that Steiro had company in the Round of 16.
Schnur, ranked No. 7 nationally and the draw's top seed, ousted Adams' Gamecock teammate Andrew Schafer in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, to reserve his spot in the Round of 16. At the opposite end of the bracket, the 22nd-ranked and second-seeded Schneider tallied one of two straight-set victories for Carolina en route to the final 16. Murray rounded out Carolina's sophomore trio, handling South Carolina's Harrison O'Keefe 6-4, 6-0 to punch his ticket to the final 16.
In doubles, Carolina's top-seeded duo of Schnur and junior Brett Clark (ranked No. 8 nationally) enjoyed a first-round bye before overwhelming Clemon's Fernando Sala and Daffra Sanon 8-2 in the Round of 32.
The Tar Heels' sixth-seeded tandem of Murray and Schneider faced more resistance on their way to the Round of 16. The duo beat Appalachian State's J.W. Kleynhans and Jack Maddocks 8-4 in the first round before edging South Carolina's Andrew Schafer and Sam Swank 8-6 in the Round of 32.
Carolina's pair of Steiro and freshman Robert Kelly claimed a spot in the Round of 16, following up a walkover win with an 8-0 blanking of East Carolina's Damien Bernard and Fredric Lehfeldt in the Round of 32.
