FLUSHING MEADOW, N.Y. - North Carolina sophomores Brayden Schnur and Ronnie Schneider both notched first-round victories against top-20 opponents en route to the Round of 16 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. on Thursday.
In a showdown of top-10 players, Schnur, ranked seventh nationally, rallied for a 7-5, 5-7(5), 7-5 win against Columbia's No. 8 Winston Lin. Schnur trailed a break for most of the third set but was able to fend off a match point with Lin serving up 5-4. The Tar Heel sophomore then rattled of three straight games to seal the victory. The win marks Schnur's third against top-10 opponents, with his other two coming against Illinois and Oklahoma in dual-match play last season.
Schneider, ranked No. 23 in the ITA's preseason poll, claimed a big victory of his own, overwhelming Harvard's No. 18 Denis Nguyen 7-5, 6-1. Nguyen -- an NCAA semifinalist last season -- served as the on-site alternate for Texas' No. 5 Søren Hess Olesen, who withdrew due to injury shortly before the match. Schneider now sports a 9-4 singles record this fall, including four wins against ranked opponents.
In Friday's Round of 16 action, Schnur will face a familiar foe in Virginia Tech's No. 14 Amerigo Contini, who Schnur edged in their one meeting last season.
Schneider is slated to take on Southern California's No. 39 Jonny Wang in his second-round match.
