Schnur Claims ITA Carolinas Regional Singles Crown
October 20, 2014 | Men's Tennis
CARY, N.C. - North Carolina sophomore Brayden Schnur defeated Duke's Jason Tahir 6-3, 6-2 in the ITA Carolinas Regional singles final on Monday at Cary Tennis Park. As the singles champion, Schnur will earn an automatic berth to the ITA National Indoors, which will be played Nov. 6-9 at the site of the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.
Schnur, ranked No. 7 in the ITA preseason poll and the top seed in the draw, was able to pull through a first set that began with three consecutive breaks. He closed out his victory against the 27th-ranked and fourth-seeded Tahir in convincing fashion, notching an ace to gain a 5-2 advantage in the second set before sealing the match the following game with a backhand return.
The win marks the second time in three years that the Tar Heels have had a player capture the ITA Carolinas singles title. In 2012, then-sophomore Esben Hess-Olesen achieved the same feat with a 6-2, 7-5 defeat of Elon's Cameron Silverman.
"I'm very happy for Brayden," said head coach Sam Paul. "That's a very demanding tournament both mentally and physically, so I'm proud of him. He's still improving, which is what you want to see."
The Tar Heels will be back in action at the Charlottesville Challenger, which is scheduled for Oct. 25-27 in Charlottesville, Va.
