CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina tipped off its 2014-15 basketball season on Friday night at Late Night With Roy Williams in the Smith Center, showcasing dance moves, comedy skits and a basketball scrimmage on the eve of the first day of practice.
Hosted by 2009 NCAA champion Tar Heel guard Bobby Frasor, the evening also spotlighted the return of women's basketball head coach Sylvia Hatchell to the sidelines. Hatchell missed last season while undergoing treatment for leukemia. Earlier in the day, Hatchell was the keynote speaker at Williams' annual Fast Break vs. Cancer fundraising breakfast on the Smith Center floor.
The final act of the evening was a 20-minute, running clock, intrasquad scrimmage. Led by 17 points from freshman forward Justin Jackson, the Blue team beat the White, 41-40. The White jumped out to 16-point lead early before the Blue clawed back to win late.
The White team included Theo Pinson, Kennedy Meeks, Marcus Paige, J.P. Tokoto, Desmond Hubert, Jackson Simmons and Stilman White. The Blue team was Jackson, Nate Britt, Joel Berry II, Luke Davis, Brice Johnson, Isaiah Hicks and Joel James.
The Tar Heels will have their first practice of the season on Saturday morning prior to the 12:30 p.m. football game against Virginia Tech.
