Tar Heel Sabre Leads The Way With Three In The Top Three
November 24, 2014 | Fencing
“We fenced most of the same people we saw last weekend plus a few others we hadn't seen,” UNC coach Ron Miller said. “The field size this weekend was a little smaller, but the quality was outstanding. Any time you're the top 16 in this competition, that's a great result.”
Beyond the top-three sabre finishes, the Tar Heels had other encouraging results.
Carolina showed its depth throughout the women's sabre field. After Litynski, sophomore Sarah Hanvy was 18th, Diana Philpot was 21st, Caitlin Malone was 23rd, Meredith Bozentka was 25th, Noa Allen was 33rd and Maura Thornton was 39th.
In women's epee, Samantha Galina was 16th and Elli Moreno was 20th.
In women's foil, Amanda Lalezarian was 20th and Amethyst Evans tied for 32nd.
In men's epee, Parker Williams was 13th and Cody Barnes was 36th.
In men's foil, Gabe Foster was 28th, Harry Adams and Ezra Baeli-Wang tied for 33rd, Jake Bernstein was 36th and Will Woliver-Jones tied for 37th.
“We still had a lot of people missing – we were significantly underrepresented in some weapons because of academic conflicts and some illnesses,” Miller said.. “Especially under those circumstances, we were very pleased with the results.”
UNC won't compete again until 2015. Following a North American Cup event in Salt Lake City Jan. 9-12, the Tar Heels return to action as a team back where they competed last in 2014, in State College, Pa.. The Penn State Dual Meets are set for Jan. 17-18 and will kick off spring semester competition for the squad.
