CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 8 North Carolina volleyball team will travel to Boston College for a Friday match-up before returning home to face the Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Carmichael Arena.
In its last match, UNC swept through the Miami Hurricanes 3-0 on Halloween night. Leigh Andrew had 15 kills and 9 digs for UNC, while Lauren McAdoo chipped in 11 kills and 9 digs. The Tar Heels held Miami to a .142 hitting percentage and forced 17 attack errors in the match.
PREVIEWING THE BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES
Boston College is the first repeat match-up for the Tar Heels this season, after UNC defeated BC 3-0 on Oct. 24. Boston College is 9-12 overall and snapped a three-game losing streak with a five-set victory over Notre Dame on Nov. 2. Katty Workman led the BC attack with 16 kills and 11 digs in the game.
Workman, the centerpiece of the Eagles offense, had eight kills with eleven errors last time UNC faced the Eagles. For the season, Workman is knocking down 3.60 kills/set and picking up 2.51 digs/set. The Eagles also look to Sol Calvete as a solid all-around option, as Calvete is good for 2.13 kills/set and 2.97 kills/set.
UNC is 17-0 all-time against Boston College after the home victory earlier this season. The Tar Heels will face the Eagles this Friday at Power Gym at 7 p.m. Live video and Gametracker will be provided through bceagles.com.
PREVIEWING THE VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES
The Hokies are coming off a massive weekend that saw Virginia Tech upset two of the top teams in the ACC. Virginia Tech knocked off Pittsburgh 3-1 behind 14 kills from Lindsey Owens and 7 kills from Kennedy Bryan. The Hokies then hosted Duke on Sunday and defeated the Blue Devils in a five-set thriller, 3-2. Owens had 12 kills in the match, while Ashley Battle added 10 kills and 7 blocks.
Owens, a 6-0 outside hitter, leads Tech with 3.32 kills/set so far this season, good for No. 9 in the ACC. Redshirt senior libero Megan Beckwith averages 3.41 digs/set and .31 aces/set for the Hokies, while Kathryn Caine adds 2.40 kills/set on a .298 hitting percentage.
Head Coach Chris Riley is in his eight season at Virginia Tech and has guided Tech to an 11-13 record in 2014. In addition to the wins over Duke and Pittsburgh, Riley and the Hokies have a signature win over then-No. 12 Illinois on Sept. 13.
UNC is 20-6 all-time against Virginia Tech after defeating the Hokies 3-0 last year in Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels will face Tech this Sunday at 2 p.m. in Carmichael Arena. Live video and live stats will be available through GoHeels.com.
