ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE
2014 marks the eighth annual challenge between the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big Ten. UNC has a 5-2 all-time record in the challenge, 1-2 on the road. This is Rutgers first season in the Big Ten.
FIRST MEETING
Thursday will be the first meeting between these two women's basketball powerhouse programs.
HEAD-TO-HEAD HOF HEAD COACHES
Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell, a 2013 Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Inductee, is the active wins leader in collegiate women's basketball with an overall record of 942-331, spanning 40 seasons as a head coach. That includes a 670-251 mark in 29 seasons in Chapel Hill.
C. Vivian Stringer, who was inducted to the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 2009, has compiled an overall record of 935-341 in 44 seasons, including the last 20 years with the Scarlet Knights.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
North Carolina is ranked No. 6 in both the Associated Press and USA TODAY Sports Coaches Polls this week, up five slots in the AP and six in the USA Today poll. Rutgers checks in 18th in the AP and 20th in the coaches.
TAR HEELS NAMED NCAA.COM TEAM OF THE WEEK
North Carolina has welcomed the return of head coach Sylvia Hatchell to the sidelines by charging from the gate to a 7-0 overall record that includes winning the Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Hawaii during Thanksgiving weekend.
Hatchell has returned to coach the Tar Heels this season after missing last season as she battled leukemia.
The three victories scored in Hawaii were against Stanford (70-54), Prairie View A&M (81-45) and Hawaii (74-65). Those wins, combined with first week victories against UCLA, Oklahoma State and Oregon, has North Carolina now No. 6 in the Associated Press poll.
The biggest win of the week was the 16-point victory against Stanford, which came seven months after the Cardinal had ended North Carolina's season in the regional championship game of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Latifah Coleman scored a career-high 19 points and Xylina McDaniel added 15 points in the decisive win.
COLEMAN NAMED MVP OF RAINBOW WAHINE SHOOTOUT
Senior point guard Latifah Coleman had the best game of her career in the 70-54 victory over #5 Stanford on Nov. 28 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Pageland, S.C., native had a career-high 19 points along with six rebounds and six assists. She averaged 13.7 points by shooting 64% from the field and 80% (8-10) from distance. Coleman was 4-4 from three for 16 points against Hawaii.
NEXT UP
Carolina returns home to host Appalachian State on Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. in Carmichael Arena. Two days later #17 Oregon State comes to Chapel Hill for a 6 p.m. contest on ESPN3.
MYRTLE BEACH, MYRTLE BEACH
UNC makes its annual trip to the beach for two games in mid-December at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The Tar Heels will face Maine on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. and Elon on Dec. 21 at 3 p.m.
