CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina head women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell announced Tuesday that All-ACC junior forward Xylina McDaniel is sidelined indefinitely with an injury to her lower right leg, suffered in the game against Elon on Dec. 21 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
McDaniel, from Columbia, S.C., is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday. The UNC Sports Medicine staff will evaluate her options after surgery for a possible return during the 2014-15 season.
She started the first 12 games of the season, averaging 11.3 points and 6.6 rebounds for the ninth-ranked Tar Heels.
In McDaniel's absence, UNC won 71-56 over Albany on Tuesday at Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels improved to 12-1 and will host ETSU in their next game on Friday.
McDaniel, the 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year, has been a preseason All-ACC selection each of the last two years. In 81 career games, making 80 starts, McDaniel owns career averages of 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds in parts of three seasons.
