Jacksonville Tops Carolina, 1-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville topped North Carolina 1-0 on Sunday as the Tar Heels moved to 2-5 for the season.
Carolina tallied just three hits in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins, finishing the weekend 1-2 at the JU Tournament.
"I'm disappointed with how we finished today," head coach Donna J. Papa said. " We started the weekend well with our win over a ranked Louisville team, but we couldn't get the bats going in our games against Jacksonville. Our pitching was good all weekend, but you can't win games with just three hits. We really need to start putting hits together."
The Dolphin's scored early as Lexie Ballard singled to lead off the second, advancing to third on a single by Victoria Brown before scoring on another single by Codi Kelly.
Carolina had several key defensive plays in the field and Jenna Kelly had a hard double to the fence in the Tar Heels' final at-bat, but a double play ended UNC's chance of making a comeback.
Lori Spingola took the loss, pitching five innings and giving up eight hits while fanning four batters. Lauren Batten tossed the final two innings, striking out two while giving up just one hit.
Up Next: The Tar Heels continue their travels this week as they head out to California to face Fullerton on Tuesday. Carolina then heads to Hawaii where the team will face San Jose State, St. Mary's and host Hawaii in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational.
The Tar Heels will have two additional games on Saturday and Sunday, with their opponent TBD based on their outcome in the first three games.
