Tar Heels Complete Opening Day At ACC Championships
February 27, 2014 | Swimming & Diving
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Led by a school record performance in the 200-yard medley relay, the North Carolina men's swimming and diving team is in sixth place after the opening day of the 2014 ACC Championships. The Tar Heels have 96 points after the opening day of the championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
"We started men's ACC's with two events tonight," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "In the 200 medley relay we set a school record and had an NCAA "A" qualifying time. It was a very fast event and we needed to be better in our relay exchanges in order to place higher. But the four guys on that relay are all back next year. We're still pretty young and we are getting better. We're excited we made the NCAA cut and look forward to swimming that event next month at the national meet."
The Tar Heels started off the evening with a school record time in the 200-yard medley relay. The all-sophomore relay included Nic Graesser (21.39), Kurt Wohlrab (24.39), Sam Lewis (20.47) and Logan Heck (19.55). Carolina's time of 1:25.80 was good for sixth place.
UNC broke the previous school record of 1:26.19 set at last year's ACC Championship by Graesser (21.54), Wohlrab (24.54), Lewis (20.81) and Kyle Ficker (19.30).
Carolina also took sixth place in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:24.58. The Tar Heel relay included senior J.T. Stilley (1:36.33), senior Brad Dillon (1:35.41), sophomore Dominick Glavich (1:36.81) and senior Alex Gianino (1:36.03).
"The 800 free relay was also extremely competitive," said DeSelm. "Five teams made the NCAA "A" cut and we were just shy of it. We have a couple of guys on there who are not natural 200 freestylers. But we were very proud of the effort we got from everyone on that relay."
"This is a long meet and we have a lot of swimming left to do," said DeSelm "I'm very confident we are going to have a great meet and we're excited for tomorrow morning's prelims."
