CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior midfielder Ryan Creighton (West Chester, Pa.) put the end on a tremendous career on the University of North Carolina men's lacrossse team as he was named Friday as a member of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association 2014 Scholar All-America Team presented by Northwestern Mutual.
On Thursday, the senior tri-captain of the 2014 Tar Heels had been named a third-team All-America by the USILA for his play on the field. A four-year starter for UNC either as a short-stick offensive midfielder or short-stick defensive midfielder, Creighton led UNC in caused turnovers in 2014 after setting a school record for goals scored by a short-stick defensive midfielder in 2013.
Creighton was a three-time All-America at UNC, being named honorable mention in 2012 and 2013 in addition to his third-team selection this year. He was also named All-ACC in 2014.
A USILA Scholar All-America must be nominated by his coach and be a student with a senior year academic standing and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. He must also be an All-America, a member of the North/South Team or an outstanding league or conference player.
Creighton earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from UNC earlier this month. He graduated from Malvern Preparatory School in 2010 before joining the Tar Heel program. Creighton led UNC to four successive 10-plus win seasons, four NCAA Tournament bids and the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament title.
He was also a second round pick of the Florida Launch in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Draft and was the highest Tar Heel pick in this year's professional draft.
Creighton was Carolina's first USILA Scholar All-America since Ryan Flanagan was so honored in 2011.
