September 14, 2014 | Men's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Ben Griffin took home his first collegiate title at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate with a score of 10-under 206. The North Carolina men's golf team also won its first tournament of the season with a score of 26-under-par 838.
"This was a wonderful win," Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "The course definitely played harder for the final round, and I am very proud of our guys for increasing the margin of victory. It is always important to defend your home turf. To have the individual champion and 8 players finishing in the top 25 is a great way to play at home. What a great weekend for Ben. To get his first college win in only his second collegiate tournament is fantastic. Sometimes the toughest place to win is at home, but he took care of business this week."
Griffin, a freshman from Chapel Hill, held onto his lead Sunday with a 2-under 70 in the final round. Griffin made the turn at 2-under and was able to maintain that score with a birdie and a bogey on the back, including a par-saving up and down out of the hazard on the par-5 13th.
"First of all, I'd like to thank Finley Golf Course, they've supported me the past four years or so," Griffin said. "I love this golf course. I'd like to thank my parents and all the support from Chapel Hill this week. They really helped me play well. It feels good to be a Tar Heel; I'm glad to be a part of it."
