Loeb Wins In Straight Sets At American Collegiate Invite
September 4, 2014 | Women's Tennis
Loeb won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, over UCLA sophomore Jennifer Brady to reach the tournament's semifinals.
A sophomore from nearby Ossining, N.Y., Loeb will face Danielle Collins of Virginia on Friday. Collins, the defending NCAA national singles champion, defeated Florida's Olivia Janowicz on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Loeb's teammate and the tournament's second seed Hayley Carter fell 6-4, 6-1, to Kristie Ahn, a former star player at Stanford.
Despite losing, Carter still enjoyed her time in New York playing alongside the best tennis players in the world.
"This has been an amazing experience," said Carter. "This morning I got to practice next to (Caroline) Wozniacki, Serena (Williams) and (Tomas) Berdych. It was a tough day but I can't hang my head too much!"
Held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the American Collegiate Invitational featured eight men and eight women selected to compete in the first event of its kind. The men's and women's singles winner will be guaranteed a wild card into the qualifying draw of the 2015 US Open. Wild cards into the main draw will be awarded to the men's winner if he's ranked No. 250 or better next summer and to the women's champion if she's ranked No. 150 or better.
North Carolina gets its fall season underway at the Ranked +1 Tournament in Cary, N.C., Sept 12-14 at the Cary Tennis Park.
