Craven's First Half Goal Downs Old Dominion
September 6, 2014 | Men's Soccer
Craven struck for the game winner by collecting the rebound of his first shot and depositing the ball into the net, just 34 seconds before intermission. The unassisted tally is the second of the season for the St. Simon Island, Ga., native.
Senior keeper Brendan Moore made just two saves for his first shutout of 2014, and make Craven's goal standup as the difference in this matchup of two top-25 ranked clubs.
The second half was all Carolina in terms of possession and scoring chances. The Tar Heels had nine of the 11 shots taken in the second half.
Senior Rob Lovejoy did well to beat two ODU defenders in the 68th minute, leading to a pass onto fellow Tar Heel forward Alan Winn who was 1-v-1 with the keeper, however, the rookie from Texas curled a shot just wide of the right post from 12 yards out.
Carolina continued to maintain possession of the ball for most of the second half. A few chances arose for the Tar Heels, but they were unable to push across an insurance marker.
In the final minute, freshman Zach Wright tip-toed along the end line and around a Monarch defender, found Lovejoy open in front of the goal area, but his point-blank shot was just wide.
Carolina maintained a healthy shot lead throughout the match, culminating with a 17-5 edge at the final horn. The Tar Heels also led 6-3 in corner kicks.
UNC will take on VCU on Sunday in Richmond, Va., at 7 p.m.
