Litynski Leads Tar Heels With Third At Salt Lake City NAC

Members of the UNC fencing teams competed for the first time in 2015 last weekend at the U.S. Fencing North American Cup event in Salt Lake City, Utah. Senior Gillian Litynski was the top Tar Heel performer, taking third in a field of 97 in Division I Women's Sabre.
The competition began Friday and ran through Monday. Junior Women's Epee was the first event and two Tar Heel freshmen competed, with Samantha Galina finishing 54th and Elli Moreno 111th. In Division I men's foil, also on Friday, freshman Gabe Foster was 132nd and junior Harry Adams was 147th. In Junior Men's Sabre, sophomore Evan Philpot was 75th.
On Saturday in DI Women's Sabre, Carolina displayed its depth with four competitors. Behind Litynski's third place finish, sophomore Sarah Hanvy tied for 34th, sophomore Caitlin Malone was 39th and freshman Diana Philpot was 62nd.
Also on Saturday, sophomore Amanda Lalezarian took 20th in Junior Women's Foil and freshman Kara Bloomfield finished tied for 106th.
On Sunday, senior Lidea Shahidi was 93rd in Division I Women's Epee and Evan Philpot was 43rd in Division I Men's Sabre.
Monday, Lalezarian placed 31st in DI Women's Foil and Diana Philpot was 36th in Junior Women's Sabre.

The Tar Heels return to collegiate competition this weekend at the Penn State Dual Meets in University Park, Pa. The women's team competes on Saturday and the men's team on Sunday. In addition to the host Nittany Lions, the defending NCAA Champions, UNC will face Drew, Penn, Duke, Columbia, Haverford and Temple.
