CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A pair of standouts on UNC's 2014 ACC regular-season co-champion women's soccer team have been named to Soccer America's All-Freshman Team for the recently completed season.
Megan Buckingham, a forward from Novi, Mich., was named to the first-team squad. She played in all 20 games for the Tar Heels last season and started the last 18 in a row. Buckingham totaled 1,143 minutes played, logging time at both forward and in the midfield. She scored four goals for the Tar Heels, including two game-winning tallies against Ohio State and Clemson as the Tar Heels went 14-4-2.
Jessie Scarpa, a defender from Lakeland, Fla., who also played some time in the midfield, had a spectacular freshman campaign and was named to the Soccer America All-Freshman second team. Scarpa enrolled at Carolina coming off a torn ACL from her senior year of high school. She battled various other injuries at Carolina as a first-year player but persevered to have one of the team's most consistent seasons. She played in 18 games, starting eight times and played 1,100 minutes for a defense that allowed only 0.72 goals a game.
