CHAPEL HILL—North Carolina (13-4, 3-1 ACC) will try for its third Atlantic Coast Conference win in a row when it hosts Virginia Tech (8-8, 0-3) on Sunday night in the Smith Center. Tipoff is set for 6:32 p.m., and Adam Amin (play-by-play) and former Tar Heel All-America Brad Daugherty (analyst) will have the call for ESPNU's national television audience.
The Tar Heels have won back-to-back nailbiters, beating Louisville by a point last Saturday in Chapel Hill before winning by two at North Carolina State on Wednesday night. UNC has won seven of its last eight outings.
The Hokies have lost four games in a row, including ACC contests at home against Syracuse and on the road at Florida State and Louisville. On Tuesday night, the Hokies dropped a 78-63 decision at Louisville. The Hokies are 0-3 in ACC play (losses at home to Syracuse and on the road at Florida State and Louisville) and 0-4 on the road this season.
The Tar Heels lead the all-time series with Virginia Tech, 64-13 overall and 11-3 since the Hokies joined the ACC prior to the 2004-05 season. Carolina is 27-6 against the Hokies in Chapel Hill and 4-1 in the Smith Center.
The Tar Heels have won nine of their last 10 meetings with the Hokies overall and 27 of the last 30 encounters.
Last year, James Michael McAdoo led the way with 15 points and Leslie McDonald (14) and J.P. Tokoto (12 and seven rebounds) pitched in as the Tar Heels won 60-56 at Virginia Tech on March 1, 2014, in Blacksburg, Va.
Three of Carolina's next four games and four of its next six will be in the Smith Center. Starting Feb. 7, the Tar Heels will begin a stretch that will see them play three in a row and five of seven on the road.
