Tar Heels Finish Second in Washington, D.C

Washington, D.C – At the Lindsey Ferris Invitational, the North Carolina gymnastics team finished second behind George Washington with a final score of 194.550. Freshman Morgan Lane tied for second in the all-around competition with a score of 39.200.
In its second competition of the 2015 season, UNC travelled to Washington, D.C to face George Washington, Temple, Cornell and Pittsburgh. The Tar Heels outlasted Pittsburgh Temple and Cornell, but were edged out by No. 19 George Washington.
“Today, we recorded a stronger team performance than last week [against Auburn]. We improved upon our score and recorded a good score for an away meet this early in the season,” said head coach Derek Galvin.
The Tar Heels began the meet on the uneven bars, tallying a score of 48.700. The uneven bars proved to be the Tar Heels' best rotation of the afternoon. Freshman Kaitlynn Hedelund recorded a 9.825, which tied for the highest among all competitors. Freshman Morgan Lane received a 9.775, junior Lexi Cappalli was awarded a 9.725 and red-shirt senior Acacia Cosentino recorded a 9.700.
Carolina next competed on the balance beam, recording a team score of 48.675. The Tar Heels recorded two scores in the top five. Lane was awarded a 9.850, which ties for the highest score among all competitors. Senior Haley Watts scored a 9.775, tying for fifth. In addition, junior Sarah Peterson and Hedelund both recorded a score of 9.750.
Moving on to the floor exercise, Carolina totaled a score of 48.550. The Tar Heels placed three gymnasts in the top five. Lane scored a 9.850, tying for first place. Watts and Cappalli both tied for fifth place, receiving a score of 9.800.
The Tar Heels finished competition on the vault, totaling a score of 48.625. Peterson recorded a career high score, a 9.900, which tied for first among all competitors. Cappalli scored a 9.750 and Lane a 9.725.
In the all-around competition, UNC placed three gymnasts in the top five. Lane tied for second with a total score of 39.200. Watts finished fourth with a 38.900 and Cappalli placed fifth with a 38.825.
“Overall, we are pleased with our improvement [this week] and we are looking forward to next week,” said Galvin.
North Carolina will next be in action on Sunday, Jan. 25 in Towson, Md. The Tar Heels will take on Towson, West Chester and William & Mary at 4 p.m. in the SECU Arena.
