GASTONIA — Although this is her 40th year of coaching, Sylvia Rhyne Hatchell in some ways feels like it's her first.

Having missed the entire 2013-14 season while undergoing treatment for leukemia, the North Carolina women's basketball coach now has a different perspective than she's ever had.

“I'm so thankful to be back,” Hatchell said. “You don't realize how much you love something and how much of a part of you it is until it's taken away.”

Back this season to the sport she loves, Hatchell on Friday returned to something else she cherishes: her hometown of Gastonia. It was a night for Hunter Huss High School to honor Hatchell, widely considered the school's greatest ambassador.
