ANNAPOLIS, Md. ? North Carolina earned its third dual victory in a row with a 27-6 defeat of Navy. After giving up a pin to begin the match, the Tar Heels powered back with nine consecutive decisions. The Tar Heel wrestlers will return to action tomorrow against Rider and George Mason at the George Mason Duals.
The match began at 125, with North Carolina's Alex Rinaldi taking on Navy's Cam Timok. After a back-and-forth match, Timok earned the pin over Rinaldi in 5:50.
That was the final loss of the night for the Tar Heels.
At 133, Troy Heilmann won by 4-3 decision over Navy's Colton Rasche. In the first, Heilmann was credited a takedown, but after a challenge from Navy that call was reversed, making the match scoreless after one. Rasche earned a reversal after selecting down position for the first points of the match. Heilmann escaped from down position and took down Rasche for the lead. Although Rasche escaped, Heilmann secured a point from riding time to earn the victory.
No. 15 Joey Ward earned his 18th victory of the season with an 8-1 decision over Patrick Prada. Ward took an early lead with a takedown and two near fall points in the first period and never looked back. Ward earned an escape and takedown in the second after choosing down position to begin the period. Prada earned a late escape in the third, but Ward locked up the point for riding time for an 8-1 win. Ward's victory tied up the dual at 6.
Christian Barber gave UNC its lead with a 7-3 decision over Corey Wilding. Barber took down Wilding for the first points of the match, but Wilding escaped for a one-point difference going into the second. Barber continued to double-up Wilding in the second. After selecting down position, Barber reversed and took down Wilding, but Wilding escaped each time. A quiet third period and the riding time point gave Barber a 7-3 victory and gave UNC a 9-6 lead.
At 157, UNC's Chris Mears defeated Navy's Drew Daniels. Daniels earned the first points of the match, but Mears quickly escaped, so the wrestlers were neutral for much of the first. Mears took the lead in the second with an escape and takedown. Daniels earned one escape in the second and two in the third, but a second takedown for Mears secured his win in a 6-5 decision.
No. 20 Ethan Ramos earned a huge win over No. 13 Peyton Walsh of Navy. Ramos took the lead early, earning two takedowns and two points from near fall in the first. Walsh tried to come back in the second with an escape and takedown, but a reversal from Ramos kept him solidly in the lead. Ramos closed out the bout with an escape and takedown, as well as the riding time point, for a 12-5 decision.
North Carolina's John Michael Staudenmayer defeated Jadaen Bernstein in a close 5-3 decision. Bernstein took a two-point lead into the second period after a takedown in the first. Staudenmayer escaped from down position to cut Bernstein's lead to one. In the final period, Staudenmayer put Berstein on his back for three near fall points to earn the win.
At 184, Scott Marmoll secured the team victory with a 4-2 decision over Michael Woulfe. After a scoreless first period, Woulfe earned an escape in the second as the first point of the match. Marmoll escaped from bottom to tie the match up, but surrendered a point due to stalling. Marmoll scored a late takedown to win 4-2 and push the Tar Heel lead to 21-6.
Chip Ness faced Navy's Steban Cervantes at 197. Ness took down Cervantes in the first and escaped from down position in the second to earn a three-point lead. Cervantes escaped from bottom in the third,? but the point for riding time gave Ness the 4-2 decision.
At heavyweight, Frank Abbondanza closed out the successful dual for the Tar Heels against Colynn Cook. Cook and Abbondanza were even after one; Cook took down Abbondanza, but Abbondanza reversed him. Abbondanza rode out Cook in the second and escaped in the third to earn the victory 4-2 with the riding time point. With Abbondanza's decision, North Carolina defeated Navy 27-6.
