October 11, 2015 | Women's Soccer
TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - A late goal by Florida State's Berglind Thorvaldsdottir was the difference as second-ranked Florida State defeated top-ranked North Carolina in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Seminole Soccer Complex. With the 1-0 victory, the Seminoles retain the top spot in the ACC at 5-0-1 while the Tar Heels fall to 4-2-0 in ACC play.
The only goal of the game came at 78:16 when Cassie Miller, the Florida State goalkeeper, launched a long punt from her penalty box that bounced over the Tar Heels' defense back line and found Thorvaldsdottir in stride one-on-one against UNC goalkeeper Lindsey Harris. Thorvaldsdottir took a couple of touches and finished into the left side of the goal from 15 yards.
Florida State, which is now 5-0-1 against the Tar Heels in the last six meetings between the two teams, continued a long shutout streak with the clean sheet. FSU has allowed only one goal in ACC play, an own goal by Clemson. The Seminoles are now 12-1-1 overall while Carolina fell to 11-2-1. With back-to-back losses to Louisville and Florida State Carolina has lost consecutive games for only the ninth time in school history.
Florida State dominated the first half of the game, outshooting the Tar Heels 12-5, including taking 12 of the last 14 shots of the first half. For the game, Florida State finished with a 5-2 edge in shots on goal and a 15-10 advantage in overall shots. The Seminoles also had an edge in corner kicks 7-4.
Prior to the goal by Thorvaldsdottir, FSU had two excellent chances to take the lead against the Tar Heels. In the 31st minute, FSU had a shot by Kirsten Crowley hit the crossbar off a corner kick by Megan Connolly. FSU also almost took the lead in the 58th minute after Katie Bowen was issued a yellow card just outside the penalty box for a foul on Megan Connolly. On the ensuing free kick, Connolly's shot from 19 yards appeared to be headed to the top right corner before being punched away at the last second on a terrific save by Lindsey Harris.
UNC returns to action on Friday, October 16 when the Tar Heels play host to Duke at Fetzer Field at 7 p.m.
