CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Whitnee Johnson has been named the volunteer assistant gymnastics coach at the University of North Carolina, head coach Derek Galvin announced Tuesday.
“We are thrilled to have Whitnee on the staff,” said Galvin. “She's got a tremendous amount of energy, is very detail-oriented and is also very creative. She's already come up with some great drills and progressions for our team.
“She also does a tremendous job of holding the team accountable for the way that they are performing their skills.”
Johnson will primarily work with the team on the vault and the floor exercise.
Johnson comes to Chapel Hill from Kent State, where she competed from 2012-2015. During her time with the Golden Flashes, she accumulated an impressive list of accolades, both in the gym and in the classroom.
Johnson was an integral part of Kent State's regular season championships in the Mid-American Conference in 2013 and 2014. As a senior, Johnson served as a captain for the Golden Flashes, leading the team to a first place finish in the conference championship meet.
In May, Johnson graduated summa cum laude with a degree in exercise science. She earned academic All-MAC and scholastic All-America honors throughout her four years at Kent State. Additionally, Johnson received the Presidential Award in 2015 for sustaining a 4.0 GPA during her senior year.
Throughout her career with the Golden Flashes, Johnson notched career high scores of 9.875 on vault, 9.825 on the uneven bars, 9.875 on the balance beam, 9.85 in the floor exercise and 39.15 in the all-around competition.
Johnson is eager to begin her coaching career with the Tar Heels.
“I'm excited to join the staff and the amazing program here at Carolina and work with great coaches like Derek and Amy,” she said. “It is such a privilege. I'm excited to learn from them and help the team reach our goals.”
