Carolina Falls 1-0 At Wake Forest
October 18, 2015 | Men's Soccer
Jacori Hayes slotted home a ball in the 17th minute to give Wake Forest (10-1-2, 4-0-2 ACC) an early lead. He collected a pass at the top of the box and rang his shot off the right post for a 1-0 advantage over the Tar Heels.
Before the goal, North Carolina (11-1-1, 5-1-0 ACC) had a couple good looks of its own. The Demon Deacons goalie was caught way out of position in the 7th minute, and the only thing that stopped Zach Wright from giving the Tar Heel a lead was Wake's defender clearing the ball away from the end line.
Alan Winn took a crack at the elbow of the 18-yard box and his shot was seeking the upper-far corner, but Wake keeper Alec Ferrell got a late glove on the ball to keep the match scoreless in the 11th minute.
Carolina trailed at intermission for just the second time all year. Determined to find an equalizing goal, Jonathan Campbell nearly did just that in the 47th minute when his header off a corner kick was punched away by Ferrell.
From that point on the Demon Deacons vaunted defense did well to limit the visiting Tar Heels. Having allowed only six goals all year, Carolina found little room to operate deep inside the Wake Forest third.
In the last minute of regulation, Tucker Hume drew a foul from 30 yards out. Omar Holness was granted the kick and he sailed a shot just over the cross bar as the final horn sounded.
Tar Heel keeper James Pyle made six saves, while Ferrell was forced to make three saves on the evening.
Despite the loss, Carolina remains in first place of the Coastal Division with a four-point cushion over Notre Dame with two remaining conference matches.
Carolina visits Campbell on Tuesday at 7 p.m, and will host Louisville next Friday at 5 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
