Tar Heels Honor Seniors With A 1-0 Victory
October 28, 2015 | Men's Soccer
Carolina (14-1-1) started off the night by celebrating the six seniors on the squad: Jonathan Campbell, Jordan McCrary, Sam Euler, Alex Olofson, Tyler Ray and Raby George.
“It's just a pleasure to watch them represent the program throughout their careers,” said head coach Carlos Somoano. “There's no way to summarize them because they come in and have given to the university, to me, to the program. It's nothing I can put in words.
“Jordan McCrary was here with me from the very beginning, before I was even hired as a coach. The rest have come along, and look at the guys like Jonathan Campbell, [Alex] Olofson, Raby George, Sam Euler and Tyler Ray the way they've grown and represented the university is just something that means a lot to me, and I hope it means a lot to the university.”
The start of the game saw some quick pressure by the Tar Heels early in dreary conditions. Alan Winn created two opportunities, the closest of which was a pass attempt to Hume in the 30th minute that was blocked by the Northeastern defense.
Omar Holness kept the high tempo offense pushing with a shot in the 36th minute that rocketed just left of the post.
Northeastern (3-10-2) made its first dangerous strike of the night with a shot from Charlton Muhlauri, but goalkeeper Sam Euler dove to keep it scoreless at the end of the first half.
The Huskies nearly broke through again in the 56th minute after a corner taken by Chris Flores found the head of Andrew Lombard. The shot was cleared off the line by Warren Marshall to keep the match even.
Winn had a shot that was barely deflected over the crossbar, leading to a corner kick in the 79th minute. Winn then proceeded to shoot from the left side again in the 82nd minute, but Thuresson earned his stars with another acrobatic save to keep Northeastern in the match.
Carolina was able to finally get on the scoreboard when Holness got the ball in the midfield in the 84th minute. He found Hume surrounded by a pack of Huskies, but the lanky Texan broke free to knock one in the net and put the Tar Heels on top 1-0 for the win.
The Tar Heels will finish up regular-season play at Virginia Friday at 7:00 p.m. before returning home for the ACC Quarterfinals Nov. 8. at Fetzer Field.
