Carolina Tops Coastal In NCAA 2nd Round
November 23, 2015 | Men's Soccer
The fifth-seeded Tar Heels advance to the third round for the seventh time in the last eighth years, and will face No. 12 seed Creighton next Saturday at 7 p.m. in Chapel Hill. The Bluejays won 5-1 over Drake on Sunday.
Tucker Hume punched in the first goal just two minutes into the match, the fastest goal of the season for North Carolina (15-1-3). The offensive push started with a drive from Raby George, who found David October in the box. October connected with Hume, and the redshirt junior ripped it past the fingertips of keeper Fernando Pina for his ACC-leading 11th goal of the season.
Carolina controlled the ball for the majority of the first half, the only major break coming from a steal from Tobenna Uzo. Uzo worked past the Tar Heel defense for a one-on-one matchup with goalie James Pyle, but Pyle's aggressiveness led to the save and kept the Chanticleers (13-3-4) scoreless.
Hume had another look at goal in the 31st minute, but the rocket deflected off the far, left post and Pina was able to get his hands on it to keep it 1-0.
The slick conditions almost cost the Heels a goal in the 35th minute, as Pyle slipped going for the save, but the Tar Heel defense came to his rescue and regained possession. On the next play, a collision between Uzo and Pyle forced the UNC keeper to leave the game and swap with Sam Euler in goal with 10 minutes to play in the half.
The Chanticleers came out charging in the second half, putting more pressure on the Tar Heel defense, but Alex Olofson responded with the first shot of the half that sailed just high of the net in the 51st minute.
Ryan Reid had one of the better looks for the equalizer in the 69th minute, but a nice snag from Euler squashed the Chanticleers' hopes on the drive.
Holness, with a stylish move in the 75th minute, split two defenders and had a clear shot on goal, but the ball floated over the crossbar to stay at 1-0.
Zach Wright earned another one-on-one matchup for the Tar Heels after Hume took the ball to the chest. Wright worked his way behind the Coastal Carolina defense and made the wide open shot look easy to double the difference at 2-0.
Uzo cut the deficit with a rebound after a shot from Sergio Camargo to make it 2-1. Moments later a collision just outside the 18-yard box led to a free kick from Camargo, but the shot ran high over the net. Two clears from Wright and a foul on Coastal Carolina secured the 2-1 victory.
