UNC To Honor World Cup Champions At Duke Game

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina athletic department will honor the 2015 Women's World Cup champion Tar Heels at halftime of the UNC-Duke football game Saturday at Kenan Stadium.
UNC honorees who played on the winning USA side in Canada this past summer included defender Lori Chalupny, defender Meghan Klingenberg, midfielder Tobin Heath, goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris, defender Whitney Engen and midfielder Heather O'Reilly. The USA won its first World Cup title since 1999, going undefeated throughout the tournament and beating Japan 5-2 in the World Cup final in Vancouver.
UNC head coach Anson Dorrance will also be present for the presentation as will Tar Heel senior midfielder Katie Bowen who was a starter for New Zealand at the World Cup.
The USA has won World Cup titles in 1991, 1999 and 2015. Altogether, nine current and former Tar Heels played in the most recent World Cup. Lucy Bronze represented England and Robyn Gayle played for Canada.
Both Klingenberg and Bronze were named to the All-Tournament Team.
