UNC Moves Past Appalachian State

North Carolina (6-4) received 17 points from Destinee Walker, 13 points from Hillary Summers and nine points and 12 rebounds from Stephanie Watts.
Kaila Craven led Appalachian State (1-6) with 15 points, KeKe Cooper had 12 points and nine rebounds and Madi Story added 11 points.
By the time the Mountaineers made their first shot it was already 10-1 in favor of the Tar Heels. It took over five minutes for App State to see a ball go through the net, missing 10-straight attempts to open the game.
Walker's second three-pointer of the quarter secured a 17-6 lead for Carolina after 10 minutes. The six points marked the fewest scored in a period by a Tar Heel opponent this season.
App State got within 21-15 on a three-pointer from Farrahn Wood. However, late in the first half Cherry found Erika Johnson for a bucket underneath the hoop and Carolina took a 26-18 lead into halftime.
Craven would trim the Carolina lead to 32-29 midway through the third quarter, but the Heels responded with a 7-0 run to lead 39-29. In the meantime, the UNC defense clamped down and forced 11-straight misses to regain a little breathing room over the Mountaineers.
Walker drained another deep ball early in the fourth to put Carolina up 53-41 with 8:04 to go. The Mountaineers got within four points midway through the final period, but the Heels pulled away down the stretch to earn the win.
Carolina visits Oklahoma State on Monday at 8 p.m. EST in Stillwater, Okla.
