GREENSBORO, N.C. --- After securing the second ITA National Team Indoor Championship title in three years, North Carolina senior Caroline Price earned the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week award, the league office announced Tuesday.
No. 21 Price won all eight of her singles and doubles matches, including breaking Kennedy Shaffer of Georgia in the third set to win the championship. Price won all her doubles matches with No. 3 Jamie Loeb on Court 2 and earned singles wins on Court 3.
Price started her undefeated run Friday with a 6-1 victory over Adamovic/Babic of No. 16 Oklahoma State, followed by a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 53 Katarina Adamovic of No. 16 Oklahoma State. The Tar Heels beat the Cowboys 5-1 in the match. Saturday was a day of blanks as Price helped drop No. 8 Wagner/Lileikite of No. 12 Miami 6-0 then smoked No. 94 Lina Lileikite 6-3, 6-0, giving Carolina the 4-0 victory.
Sunday saw a matchup of No. 2 Florida and No. 3 North Carolina, but Price came out with a huge victory over No. 17 Morgan/Woolcock at 6-4, along with a win over No. 11 Belinda Woolcock 6-1, 6-1 to lift the Tar Heels to a 4-0 semifinal win over the Gators.
Monday's final against Georgia ended as a grind for Carolina. What started as a simple win in the doubles matches, including a 6-2 win by Price/Loeb over Shaffer/Garcia of Georgia came down to two singles matches between Loeb and Price. When the momentum began to shift toward the Bulldogs, Price pulled out the win for the Tar Heels, including breaking Shaffer on match point to win 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. That second set loss was the only set she lost all weekend.
With the wins this weekend, Price improved to 19-4 on the season, including 11 victories over ranked opponents. Price and the Tar Heels return to action on Thursday, Feb. 19 against N.C. State in Raleigh.
